Box Turtle

  • Box turtles have a hinged plastron that allows the box turtle to close up its shell almost completely.

  • Males tend to be a bit larger than the females and have a concave plastron.

  • Florida has 4 species of box turtle, the Florida box turtle, eastern box turtle, gulf coast box turtle and three- toed box turtle.

  • They have a home range of 750 foot diameter or less of which the primarily stay.

  • Feed on snails, insects, berries, fungi, slugs, worms, roots, flowers, fish, frogs, and will feed on carrion!

  • females nest and lay egg May through July

  • Please never collect animals from the wild and never remove a box turtle from their home range.
